Time Change

Report: Oct 11, 2010
With a four hour time difference from our previous assignment and going to bed at 6pm local time we were up before most normal human beings should be. While waiting my turn for the shower I perused the local paper that was slipped under our hotel door. The title was as follows:
After saying a silent prayer to the powers that be about getting through customs without a hitch I continued on with the rest of the paper.

During breakfast we discussed our schedule for the day and a kind waitress took pity on us and let us know that today was Canada's Thanksgiving. Yes, Thanksgiving in October...we were very perplexed. Most stores are closed and no banks would be available to exchange our American  funds to Canadian. It being a national holiday threw a huge wrench in our plans but we refused to let it spoil our schedule.

One thing about people visiting family on holidays is the low traffic level and the coffee shops willing to sell to poor souls making long drives for turkey dinner. I would like to take this opportunity to say today I started my addiction to the super mega ultra food chain called Tim Hortons. Their coffee is hot, cheap, tastes good and their donuts aren't too shabby either. I have come to learn that "Timmies" is a national juggernaut that crushes any other fast food establishment.

With coffee in hand and light traffic due to the holiday we traveled the local suburbs around Halifax to get a feel for the city and possible future apartment locations. Bedford on the north end of Halifax Harbour is beautiful and reminded us of Healdsburg. Truro was about an hour north of that and felt like Petaluma, too much agriculture and not enough activity for us. Downtown Halifax is beautiful but expensive in comparison to any smaller towns across the bridges. Dartmouth to the north east seemed like a bedroom community, everything closes around 7 and most travel is done by ferry when heading to work. Spryfield to the west was dirty and didn't even deserve a drive through in my humble opinion.

Our map was covered with handwritten notes about living areas so it was time to head back to the hotel for our Thanksgiving Dinner and a good nights rest.
