The Farmers Market

Report: Nov 6, 2010

We've been hearing about a new farmers market down on Pier 21 that was built specifically to encourage folks to partake of the local fare while staying dry inside a beautiful building. I had just started attending the farmers market in my previous home town and really liked the selection available. Since I'm also a foodie I could not pass up the opportunity to see artisans at work selling their wares and tasting all the delicious treats available.

I've included a few pics so you can get an idea on size.

It's a two story building so I popped upstairs for a picture of the main floor.

Who knew carrots could be this beautiful?
Here's a boat that was tied up at Pier 21, the weather was less than stellar. Thank goodness we were inside.

Thanks to a passionate vegetable vendor I have tried parsnips and have fallen in love with them! I would post all of my food thoughts here but that could fill a blog all on its own. All in all the market has been a great weekend event for Goose and I. We pack our reusable bags and bring home fresh vegetables, meat, bread and sweet treats for the week. Then we supplement our dinners with trips to the regular grocery store if necessary. I can't wait to see the selection during the spring and summer.

My Eco Moment: Seems most folks here carry reusable bags for everything. In order to blend with the natives I now carry an extra bag in my pack and plan to take any extras with me to the market. They charge for plastic bags here now and some stores have gone to the extreme of not having plastic bags available for purchase. It really makes you plan ahead and take responsibility for your items. I remember in CA it would feel awkward to use them, more along the lines of "Oh, I see you have your own bags, how very eco-conscience of you". Where here they accept is as part of the solution rather than some sort of social one-up moment of "See, I'm doing my part, what are you doing that's just as green?"

  1. Oh that's way cool! (pardon the weather pun.)

No but seriously, I love a good farmers market, and it looks like you folks have a good one.

It looks as though reusable bags are the way of the future, even here in California it's getting to the point that cities are starting to ban the use of the regular plastic or paper bags. I carry mine with me at all times and feel terribly guilty if I forget. :)
