Canada Day Weekend Part 3

Report: July, 2011 Part 3

Mawio'mi anyone?

Goose and I were pretty excited to attend our first pow wow. The First Nations in our area call it a Mawio'mi or gathering of the tribal clans. Needless to say it was a stunning visual display of culture that we were proud to attend. Here's a few pics and a video during one of the ceremonial dances and drum competitions that took place.

There was an option to have dinner in a Teepee but we didn't realize it until after it was booked.

Due to the heat of the day there were pop up shade tents everywhere since costumes must have been boiling these dancers alive.

This was a quick pic taken from standing on the bleachers before folks behind me got frustrated as I was blocking their view.

This warrior was Gooses favorite due to the fierce facial paint. Close up photo is next.

And the close up!

The female dancers didn't seem to have the elaborate head pieces but made up for it with sound coming from their jingle dresses.

This is the Black Bear Clan warrior. We were pretty partial to the Black Bear Clan during the pow wow. Not only did their dancers do great but their drumming team rock it. (Video below)

After watching the video I was surprised there was a drum left after the beating they gave it.

A super quick video of a dance (it was much shorter than I thought but figured I would post it anyway)

The July wrap up is next. Needless to say we had a great first Canada Day!
