Hurricanes vs. Earthquakes

Report: August, 2011

Hurricane Thoughts:

Welp, after watching all the hype on hurricanes and how we're in the prime path of any that make it up the East Coast I can safely say "Give me earthquakes any day!". At least with earthquakes they hit, wiggle things around a bit then usually calm down. Every now and again there is that special nasty one that really tries to bring down buildings, freeways, etc. But the news coverage kicks into high gear after the event has occurred. I'm now starting to realize that hurricanes are the equivalent of WWE's Summer Slam wresting event for weather channels. At one point I know while watching the video about when one might head our direction I said to the computer screen "I get it! Now will you just tell me when the damn thing is going to be here so I can batten down the hatches already." Then the dang thing didn't even cross over Nova Scotia. I know, I should be thankful we have the weather predicting ability to prepare for the emergency...yadda yadda yadda. Nova Scotia did have a horrible hurricane about 7 years back which they call White Juan (LOL, it cracks me up every time I hear it, I'm sure every Hispanic Juan I know is as puzzled as I am). It did major damage to the province so I understand wanting as much time to prepare as possible or to evacuate if you're in a flood zone. Although, I never quite got why folks lived to close to the Russian River which has a good flood every 10 years or so. If you know it's going to flood why build there? But I digress. I'm happy the hurricane season passed us by but I wish it would take the humidity it brought along with it.

Gaming:

We were invited to a summer gaming session with a friend we met through our local comic store. His wife was traveling for two months to finish up her residency as a pediatric doctor. So he figured while the wife is away it's time for long weekend gaming sessions! So for two months we bbq'd, imbibed lots of local beer, tried out what Canadian's call fajitas and enjoyed the sugar rush while killing bad guys. It sure made us miss our friends back home. We tried to describe the gaming sessions, dinners, late night runs to the Starbucks drive through and over all happiness it gave us to toss insults at each other all in the name of role playing. But our words just didn't seem like enough. We still miss you all very much! We've also figured out no matter where we go, the sight of a gaming table waiting for players to arrive brings a tear to our eye. *sniff sniff*

Busker Festival:

We had been told pretty close after our arrival that there is this great summer festival called Buskers. At first it was described as street performers and I kept envisioning those panhandlers who paint themselves gold or silver and yell at me if I don't give them money.  With my crazy dislike of homeless this festival didn't sound too appealing. Then someone else said it was professional street performers that do fire dances, cirque type physical moves and magicians. Now we were getting somewhere! That sounds like something cool to check out. Plus it's free to attend. So we waited until August, saw all the posters, listened to the radio ads and even scheduled one show based on our dentists recommendation. 10 months of hype ended up being a huge let down thanks to the tail end of a hurricane giving us torrential rain for 6 days. Only one day of shows were able to perform and downtown was so packed that people got irritated and fights broke out. I guess we'll put it on the calendar for next year. :(

Park Update:

Here's a few pics of Chocolate Lake with people actually swimming in the water. I tried to swim at least three days a week since I only have to cross the street to enjoy the lake. Most days the place was swarming with people but since I'm lucky enough to go during work hours it was pretty mellow the day I took pictures.

It was time for a new park and Goose had been doing research on a place called Long Lake. Like it's name implies walking around it would be 6-8 hours of hiking but there were a ton of cozy spots to pop off the trail and enjoy a sack lunch.

(Hrmmm, I just realized that the pics for this post are on Goose's phone. Hee hee. Seems I'll have to post them at a later date)

Inkwell Boutique:

I have fallen in love with a cute stationary company that caters to handcrafted cards and letter press. I found it one day during a downtown walkabout and have been stopping by ever since to check out their new items. The owner, Andrea, is pretty awesome and decided to have an open house. My favorite part of the evening was when Goose and I got to make our own bookmarks on a vintage letter press that they had just restored. Next month I signed up for their class to make my own calling cards. Apparently letter press folk don't go for the modern title of business card. I'll have more photos next month of my very own letter press creation.

Next month will be multiple posts again. With the end of summer and start of fall it was a mad dash to get in the last outdoor events plus a bit of a vacation trip to boot.
